Impacted By Challenges:
Children with sensory differences who lack support during childhood often grow into adults whose daily lives are still impacted by their challenges in interpreting sensory information.
These “sensational adults” may find it challenging to manage routines and activities related to work, close relationships, and recreation. Due to their lifelong struggles with sensory integration, they may also face depression, underachievement, social isolation, and other secondary emotional or social effects.
Adolescents and adults who benefited from therapy during childhood may still encounter difficulties when facing new developmental stages or life experiences. For instance, a teenager who has adjusted to secondary school challenges might struggle with the chaotic environment of a university. In such situations, brief periods of therapy or coaching through the senses, enhances self-awareness and offerstrategies for adapting to new circumstances can be highly beneficial.
The Aim Of Intervention
The aim of intervention for adults with sensory differences is to help them lead fulfilling and happy lives. Many adults with these differences struggle because they have been misunderstood throughout their lives. Often, they don’t even understand themselves. They might wonder, “Why don’t I enjoy being with people, shopping, or going to movies?” or “Why am I so clumsy?” or “Why is it so hard for me to stick with things?” “why do I feel so overwhelmed in busy places” or “Why do I feel so lethargic and unmotivated?”
When adults receive support and education for their sensory differences, their understanding improves. Through direct therapies like occupational therapy using an sensory informed approach, their perception of sensations can change. During intervention, strategies can be developed to avoid or lessen the impact of relationships and situations that cause failure, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, sensory techniques for home and work use can be taught. It is practical solutions.
