Neurodiversity and sensory processing in the workplace

Neurodiversity and sensory processing in the workplace:

With an increasing diverse workforce, creating a neurodiverse friendly sensory work environment is more important than ever.
We offer training, assessments and environment audits to businesses, universities, employees and more with the aims to:

  • Increase awareness
  • Reduce staff turnover
  • Increase employee wellbeing and engagement
  • Increase work satisfaction
  • Coach your employees through their senses – practical ‘doing’ not just talking!
  • Supporting positive communication
  • Improve environments
  • Improve accessibility

What is neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence encompasses a variety of neurological conditions that influence how people think, feel, and behave. This term includes conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, among others.

Why is sensory needs so important?

We are all sensory beings.
“The neurological process that organises sensations from one’s own body and from the environment and makes it possible to use the body effectively within the environment”
(Ayres, 1972)

Why do I need this in my setting?

There is increasing evidence that individuals with sensory processing challenges are accessing many environments which are not supporting their sensory needs. If someone’s sensory needs are being impacted negatively, this will impact their availability for learning and recovery (2021, S.Maslin, Designing Mind-Friendly Environments)
Neurodiversity conditions are recognised as a long-term condition and as such under the terms of the Equality Act 2010, requires that reasonable adjustments be made within learning/work environments.
