This session explores interoception, often described as the hidden sense that helps us notice and understand what is happening inside our bodies. We will look at how supporting children to recognise and respond to their body’s internal signals, such as hunger, tiredness or anxiety, can promote emotional understanding, self-regulation and overall wellbeing. By learning more about how interoception develops, parents and carers can create small, supportive opportunities at home to help children build a stronger sense of connection with their body and emotions. We will also share practical, everyday ideas that celebrate each child’s unique sensory profile and promote confidence in understanding their own needs.
Interoception is an important part of how we all experience and make sense of the world. When this sense is supported, children can begin to recognise what their body is telling them, communicate how they feel and find strategies that help them feel comfortable and safe. For some neurodivergent children, interoceptive experiences might feel different or more complex, but with curiosity, understanding and gentle support, we can help them develop self-awareness in a way that feels empowering, validating and truly individual.
