Position Statement: The Role of Ayres Sensory Integration® in Occupational Therapy

At OT4me, our mission is to promote independence and participation for children and young people in all areas of life – from learning and friendships to play and daily routines.

Sensory integration is a vital part of this. For many children, particularly those who are autistic, sensory differences can make everyday activities more difficult. Occupational therapists with specialist training in Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) use evidence-based approaches to help children develop strategies, adaptive responses, and environments that allow them to thrive.

Research clearly demonstrates that ASI, when delivered with fidelity, supports improvements in participation, regulation, learning, self-care, and wellbeing. It is recognised as an evidence-based practice in systematic reviews and professional guidance, including the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the NICE autism guidelines.

We also recognise the valuable role of our NHS colleagues, many of whom provide sensory-informed care within their services. Where additional specialist input is needed, HCPC-registered OTs with postgraduate SI training can offer complementary support to ensure children and families receive the right help at the right time.

For children experiencing sensory integration challenges, access to a trained occupational therapist is not optional – it is essential. Together, by working constructively across health, education, and social care, we can create inclusive, supportive environments that empower children and families to participate fully in everyday life.
